“Former Indian Cricket Captain Sourav Ganguly Counters Shoaib Akhtar’s Suggestion Regarding Virat Kohli

The proposition by Shoaib Akhtar for Virat Kohli to step away from white-ball cricket after the 2023 ODI World Cup and shift his focus to Test matches has been met with a response from former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. Akhtar’s idea was built around the concept that this transition would provide Kohli with the opportunity to surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 100 international centuries.

Observing his 15th year in international cricket on Friday, Virat Kohli’s journey commenced in 2008. Throughout this time frame, Kohli has actively participated in 111 Test matches, 275 One Day Internationals (ODIs), and 115 Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is).

Despite Kohli’s ongoing importance in both Test and ODI formats, it is noteworthy that he has not taken part in a T20I match since India’s defeat to England in the semi-finals of the 2022 T20 World Cup.

In a recent interview with RevSportz, Shoaib Akhtar offered an intriguing viewpoint on Virat Kohli’s path in international cricket after the upcoming one-day World Cup in India.

“Following this World Cup, I don’t believe he should engage in any more 50-over contests. Furthermore, if you observe him in T20s, it consumes a lot of his energy.”

“I am of the belief that he should continue to play for at least six more years and surpass Sachin Tendulkar’s milestone of 100 centuries. Kohli possesses the potential to break this record. After the World Cup, his emphasis should be on Test cricket, aiming to exceed this significant achievement.”

However, Sourav Ganguly dismissed Akhtar’s viewpoint during an event alongside a Denver gathering. Ganguly’s stance was straightforward: “Why should he? Virat Kohli should be free to play whichever format of cricket he desires. Because he delivers.”

Significantly, Kohli’s recent performances during the Test and ODI series against West Indies have further reinforced his standing in the cricketing world. Notably, in the Test series against West Indies, he reached a noteworthy milestone by securing his first overseas Test century after a five-year gap.”
