India’s Dynamic Duo, Iyer and Rahul, Stage a Remarkable Return in Asia Cup 2023 Squad 🏏”

In a significant development, batsmen Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul have made a triumphant comeback, securing their positions in India’s 17-member squad for the highly anticipated Asia Cup.

Scheduled to commence on August 30, the Asia Cup will be exclusively held in Sri Lanka, as India has opted out of participating in matches in Pakistan due to the prevailing political tensions between the two neighboring nations.

While Pakistan is slated to host four matches, including a key encounter within the Super 4 stage, Sri Lanka will play host to nine matches, culminating in the grand final set for September 17.

A notable aspect of India’s chosen squad is the absence of an off-break bowler. In a surprising move, the selectors have opted to exclude leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, instead favoring the inclusion of wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav.

Both KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer underwent an extensive rehabilitation period following their respective thigh and back injuries. KL Rahul, who also doubles as a wicketkeeper, has been out of competitive action since May, while Shreyas Iyer’s absence from international cricket dates back to March.

Adding a layer of excitement, the uncapped left-handed batter, Tilak Varma, has earned a coveted spot in the squad. His standout performances against the West Indies in a recent Twenty20 series have impressed selectors and earned him this opportunity.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar commented on Varma’s inclusion, stating, “During the West Indies series, we observed not just promising performances but also commendable temperament. This provides us with a chance to have him within the team, offering valuable exposure.”

Agarkar also noted the flexibility provided by the expanded 17-player squad, which is a step above the typical 15-player limit for the World Cup. This unique opportunity allows the coach and captain to introduce fresh talent and nurture potential prospects.

In the wicketkeeping department, the selectors have chosen Ishan Kishan as the secondary wicketkeeper, while Sanju Samson has been designated as a reserve for the upcoming tournament.

Complete Squad: Rohit Sharma (Captain), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Mohammed Shami, Ishan Kishan, Shardul Thakur, Axar Patel, Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Prasidh Krishna. Reserve: Sanju Samson.
