Rohit Sharma’s tenure in T20 Internationals has reached its conclusion, prompting selectors to evaluate his ODI captaincy role following India’s defeat against Australia in the ICC World Cup 2023 final.

As reported by the Times of India, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is seeking clarity regarding Rohit’s future in white-ball cricket while also prioritizing the development of a new captain. Sources indicate that Rohit has communicated his willingness to be excluded from consideration for the shortest format, with his last T20I appearance occurring during the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final against England.

With selectors emphasizing the nurturing of young talent, close attention will be paid to Rohit’s approach in one-day internationals, especially given the prospect of the Champions Trophy in 2025, in which Rohit may choose not to participate.

The Men in Blue’s upcoming ODI series is scheduled in South Africa. A source disclosed, “Rohit had conveyed to the Indian selection committee before the ICC World Cup 2023 that he was open to the idea of not being considered for T20Is. The selectors are inclined towards moving ahead with young players. Rohit will now shift his focus to Test cricket for the next cycle of the World Test Championship, and part of the agenda is to groom a captain for the five-day format.”
