However, what caught the attention of many was not just his scoring prowess, but the emotion-laden tribute that followed his century. After achieving his hundred runs, Stokes’ celebration moved many; he bent his middle finger and gazed at the skies. This heartfelt gesture was in memory of his father, Gerard Stokes. The elder Stokes, who was an accomplished rugby player in the 1980s, had lost his middle finger due to numerous injuries on the rugby field. Sadly, Gerard Stokes passed away in December 2020 after bravely battling brain cancer.

In the history of England’s One Day Internationals (ODI) cricket, Ben Stokes‘ 182 is now the top score, overtaking Jason Roy’s 180 against Australia in 2018. Stokes looked set to be the first English player to reach a double century in ODIs, but his journey was cut short in the 45th over. Attempting a big shot, he was caught by Will Young at the boundary off Ben Lister’s delivery.

Interestingly, this splendid century was only the fourth in Ben Stokes’ ODI career and came after a considerable six-year gap. Fans of the sport will recall that Stokes had briefly retired but chose to make a comeback in August 2023. His comeback wasn’t just a formality; he intended to help England retain their title in the upcoming ODI World Cup 2023, set to commence in India from October 5.
