Despite the separation of the opening pair consisting of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan due to Dhawan’s exclusion from the Indian team, the two cricketers maintain a strong and enduring friendship.

Shikhar Dhawan’s last appearance for the Indian team was in December 2022 before he was replaced by young talents Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan. During his tenure as India’s ODI opener, Dhawan forged a formidable opening partnership with Rohit Sharma.

Together, Dhawan and Rohit formed the fourth most successful opening ODI partnership of all time, amassing 5148 runs at an impressive average of 45, featuring 18 century partnerships. Dhawan’s international career has come to a close with notable achievements, including 6793 ODI runs, 2315 Test runs, and 1759 T20I runs, along with 24 international centuries.

Currently preparing for World Cup warm-up matches in Guwahati, Rohit Sharma opened up about his close relationship with Shikhar Dhawan in an interview with journalist Vimal Kumar.

“I am a big admirer of Shikhar Dhawan. We share a strong bond, having played together from the U-17 and U-19 levels to representing India. We also formed a successful opening partnership for a substantial period. He’s a very relaxed, fun-loving, and easygoing guy,” Rohit Sharma conveyed during his conversation with Vimal Kumar on the latter’s YouTube channel.

A few weeks prior, Shikhar Dhawan praised his former opening partner and friend, Rohit Sharma, expressing confidence in Rohit’s significant role in the upcoming 2023 World Cup.

“Rohit Sharma is a highly experienced player. He has consistently scored runs in ICC tournaments as well as bilateral series, proving his mettle on the big stage,” Dhawan remarked.

Rohit Sharma was the leading run-scorer in the 2019 World Cup, amassing a record-breaking five centuries. However, India faced disappointment in the semi-final against New Zealand.

India is set to participate in two World Cup 2023 warm-up matches: one against England on September 30 in Guwahati and the other against the Netherlands on October 3 in Thiruvananthapuram.
