In an electrifying Super 4 showdown between India and Sri Lanka at the Asia Cup, former cricketers Marvan Atapattu and Sanjay Manjrekar expressed their sympathy for India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, following his untimely dismissal.

India’s batting lineup grappled with Sri Lanka’s relentless spin assault at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium, creating a historic moment in Indian cricket as all wickets succumbed to spin. India ultimately managed to post a total of 213 runs.

Marvan Atapattu and Sanjay Manjrekar, who provided analysis on Star Sports, turned their attention to the crucial wicket of Rohit Sharma. Dunith Wellalage, despite Rohit being the sole Indian player to achieve a half-century, dismissed him with a delivery that skidded low and crashed into the stumps.

Marvan Atapattu expressed his empathy for Rohit, stating, “I am at a loss for words. I feel sorry for him. Any batsman anywhere in the world would have played the shot in the same manner.”

Conversely, Sanjay Manjrekar lauded Wellalage’s bowling and attributed Rohit’s dismissal to his unpreparedness for the delivery.

“Excellent length, a huge fan. The young bowler delivered a length that Rohit Sharma was not ready to handle, neither on the front foot nor the backfoot. Unfortunately, the ball stayed low, but credit should be given to the bowler rather than criticizing the batsman,” he commented.

Despite the unfortunate dismissal, Rohit Sharma’s performance was a standout, marking his third consecutive half-century and catapulting him beyond the 10,000-run milestone in One Day Internationals (ODIs). India’s total of 213 runs on a challenging pitch was made possible through significant contributions from KL Rahul, Ishan Kishan, and Axar Patel.
