While there is speculation circulating among fans and in various reports regarding the potential conclusion of Rohit Sharma’s T20I career, either by his own choice or as a result of selectors deciding to move in a different direction, the seasoned Indian opener and captain had previously conveyed his excitement about participating in the T20 World Cup 2024. The upcoming tournament, scheduled for June next year, will be jointly hosted by the West Indies and the USA.

The T20 World Cup 2024 holds special significance as the USA has emerged as a promising cricket market globally. The inaugural season of Major League Cricket (MLC) took place earlier this year, and the ICC had already designated the USA as a co-host for the T20 WC 2024. Notably, cricket is set to make a comeback to the Olympics in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics after an absence of over a century.

During India’s multi-format tour of the West Indies earlier this year, Rohit Sharma attended an event in the USA where he hinted at the impending T20 World Cup. In a video gaining traction on social media, Rohit expressed his anticipation for the tournament.

“More than just going and enjoying, there is another reason to come here (in the USA). Because you know the World Cup is coming. In June, there will be the T20 World Cup (2024) happening in this part of the world. So, I’m pretty sure everyone is excited. So yaa, we look forward to that,” Rohit said.

Former India batsman Gautam Gambhir is of the opinion that Rohit Sharma should continue as India’s T20 captain and lead the side in the T20 World Cup next year. Gambhir also expressed the view that Virat Kohli, despite being on the wrong side of his 30s, should also be part of the T20 World Cup squad.

“Absolutely, both [Kohli and Rohit] need to be picked, both should be picked. And, more importantly, I want to see Rohit Sharma captain in the T20 World Cup. Yes, Hardik Pandya has captained in T20Is, but I still want to see Rohit Sharma captain in the T20 World Cup,” Gambhir said on Sportskeeda.
