Ashish Nehra was reportedly approached by Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to take on the role of India’s T20 coach. However, Nehra declined the position that Rahul Dravid previously held, turning down what was rumored to be a substantial contract from the BCCI.

Rahul Dravid’s tenure as India’s all-format head coach concluded after the World Cup 2023, where India faced defeat in the final. Earlier in the year, India also suffered setbacks in the WTC Final against Australia, and in the T20 World Cup 2022, they were eliminated in the semi-final.

In a bid to end India’s decade-long ICC title drought, especially with the T20 World Cup in the West Indies scheduled for next year, the BCCI reached out to Ashish Nehra. Despite his successful coaching stint with the Gujarat Titans, reaching two consecutive IPL finals (winning in 2022 but losing in 2023 to CSK on the last ball), Nehra declined the coaching offer.

Given the BCCI’s status as one of the wealthiest cricket boards globally and their eagerness to secure an ICC trophy, it can be inferred that the offer presented to Ashish Nehra was financially significant, although specific details remain undisclosed. Nonetheless, Nehra appears hesitant to accept the coaching role.

Following Nehra’s refusal, the BCCI extended a contract renewal offer to Rahul Dravid until the upcoming T20 World Cup in June next year. India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, and Chairman of Selectors Ajit Agarkar are in favor of Dravid continuing in his role until the next T20 World Cup.

As reported by The Indian Express, “The BCCI had approached Nehra after India’s loss in the World Cup final.”

ESPNcricinfo noted that the BCCI aims to maintain continuity in the structure established by Dravid over the past two years, believing that appointing a new head coach might disrupt the team’s progress.

However, Rahul Dravid has not yet confirmed his acceptance of the contract extension. If Dravid continues as the head coach, it is likely that his assistant coaches – Vikram Rathour (batting coach), Paras Mhambrey (bowling coach), and T Dilip (fielding coach) – will retain their positions.
