Shubman Gill has risen to become the new number-one ODI batsman, marking the end of Pakistan captain Babar Azam’s two-year reign in the top spot.

Gill is staging a remarkable comeback in the ICC World Cup 2023 after missing a few matches due to dengue fever. During India’s match against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium, the right-handed batsman came close to scoring a century.

So far, he has amassed 219 runs in six matches, maintaining an average of 36.50.

Gill now boasts 830 rating points, surpassing Babar by a margin of six points. While Babar Azam has managed three half-centuries in his last four innings in the World Cup, he has not quite found his fluent form.

Shubman Gill now joins the elite ranks of Indian batsmen, with Sachin Tendulkar, Virat Kohli, and MS Dhoni being the only others who have previously held the number-one position in one-day internationals.

In another noteworthy development, Mohammed Siraj has reclaimed the number-one ranking in the fifty-over format, surpassing Australia’s Josh Hazlewood in the rankings. Siraj now boasts 709 rating points.
