In a stunning display of T20 cricket talent, the young left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal continued his impressive form by scoring his first T20I century while representing India. This remarkable achievement unfolded during India’s quarter-final match against Nepal at the Asian Games 2023 held in China.

India had secured a direct entry into the quarter-finals and commenced their Asian Games campaign with a hard-fought 23-run victory over Nepal. However, Nepal’s aggressive pursuit of the 203-run target did test India’s bowlers, but they managed to maintain their composure and secure a spot in the semi-finals.

Leading a second-string Indian team, Ruturaj Gaikwad won the toss and chose to bat first at the Pingfeng Campus Cricket Field in Hangzhou. While Gaikwad played steadily, contributing 25 runs off 23 balls, it was Yashasvi Jaiswal who stole the show with his aggressive approach. The left-handed batsman played a blazing innings, smashing 8 fours and 7 sixes on his way to an impressive 100 off just 49 balls. The opening partnership added an impressive 103 runs in 9.5 overs.

Despite the strong start, India faced some challenges and found themselves at 150/4 in the 17th over. It seemed that they might fall short of the 200-run mark, which would have been surprising given the small size of the ground. However, Rinku Singh stepped up once again to provide a clinical finish, smashing 37 runs off just 15 balls with 4 sixes and 2 fours, propelling India to a total of 202 runs.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s century came in just 48 balls, making him the third fastest Indian to achieve this milestone in the shortest international format. Only Rohit Sharma (35 balls) and KL Rahul (46 balls) have scored quicker T20I centuries for India.

In their pursuit of 203, Nepal had four batters who crossed the 20-run mark, but none of them managed to convert their starts into substantial scores. On the bowling front, Ravi Bishnoi and Avesh Khan were the standout performers, both securing 3 wickets each, while Arshdeep Singh contributed with 2 wickets. R Sai Kishore made his T20I debut for India and returned with impressive figures of 1/25.
